Miscarriage Management
Pregnancy Loss
We offer care and medical supervision for people experiencing an early pregnancy loss/miscarriage. There is no treatment that can stop a miscarriage, but there are several ways that it can be managed. Our medical staff can help you decide on the best option for your individual situation.
If you are pregnant and bleeding, there is a possibility that you may be having a miscarriage. The first step is to determine whether this is the reason for the bleeding. This may include a physical exam, an ultrasound, and blood tests.
If you appear to be miscarrying your pregnancy, we will go over your options, explain their safety and effectiveness, and help you decide how to manage the miscarriage. These may include medication to help your body expel the pregnancy tissue; a procedure to remove the tissue from your uterus; or watching and waiting.
Then, as long as you do not have heavy blood loss, fever, weakness, or other signs of infection, you have three options as to how to manage your pregnancy loss:
- Wait to see if the pregnancy will miscarry naturally
- Undergo a procedure called a D&C to remove the remainder of the pregnancy
- Take a medication that encourages the body to bleed and push out/expel the pregnancy
If you have an Rh-negative blood type, you will need a shot of low-dose Rhogam. This prevents rh-incompatibility problems in future pregnancies. Our practitioners will do a blood test to see if you are Rh negative. Read more about Rh-negative blood type and rh-incompatability here: https://www.webmd.com/baby/rh-factor.
Unfortunately, miscarriage can affect anyone. Approximately 15-25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. We understand how frightening this may be for you, we are here to support you both emotionally and physically.
